For a horse to stay healthy, he needs to be able to nibble at food all day long. However the way we keep horses they would become too fat if they stood around eating all day. So what can we do? One way is to build your own "Easy Feeder" You can look them up on the Swedish Hoof School web site and click on Easy Feeding Or if you can't do that you can go online and order a hay net made with very small mesh. This way you can put a few flakes in the net in the morning and it will keep your horse busy all day long. He will not be bored standing around doing nothing and his digestive system gets to work like it actually is supposed to do. This way you have a win win situation. You keep colic and bored behavior problems at bay. You can order the slow feeding hay net at Miller Harness Company

If you horse's frogs don't look like this! Chances are that there is thrush in there. If the frog is soft and somewhat small your horse will not land on it when he travels. It is very easy for a horse to land toe first . If this is happening you will not ever get the hooves you and your horse are waiting for. So instead of waiting for your farrier to tell you, just assume that this is the problem. Here are some great little things that will help clearing up thrush.  One method is to take the All purpose Lysol cleaner and dip cotton balls in it. Stick the soaked cotton balls in at the side of the frog and in the central sulci (The middle of the frog). Leave them in overnight and repeat for a week or so. Another great way is to get a 60cc syringe (Sold at IFA in Las Vegas) Buy athlete’s foot ointment and Neosporin with a pain ingredient. Mix them together in the syringe and squirt it in the frog. Do so daily for about a week. But please remember! You will have to think seriously about taking away the cause for thrush. Poor stable management with a never drying piss spot that the horse stands in will just breed new thrush. It is one of the most important things to take care of when you are hoping for healthy hoof growth.

Thrush! A very nasty thing
